General
The Amsterdams Chemisch Dispuut, or ACD for short, is the study association for chemistry students at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). This includes the bachelor’s programme in Chemistry and the master’s programme in Chemistry, both of which are joint-degree programmes. This means that the programme is followed at both the UvA and the VU. As a result, the ACD is a study association at both universities. The ACD has over 500 members, including eleven Honorary Members and fifteen Members of Merit.
The ACD supports chemistry students in various ways. We organise lectures and excursions and handle the sale of books and laboratory supplies. In addition, the ACD also supports chemistry students through social activities. These include sports activities, crafting activities, parties, social drinks, dinners, and weekend trips. The ACD also organises an annual international excursion, during which forty to fifty chemistry students travel to a foreign city. This week focuses on visiting companies and universities and exploring the city.
History
The ACD was founded on 7 November 1945. Since then, the association has represented the interests of students of chemistry and related fields of study. From 1945 onward, it did so for all chemistry students at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). In earlier years, the association was based at the Roeterseiland campus. In 2010, the science faculties moved to Science Park, and the ACD moved along. Since 2016, both the bachelor’s programme in Chemistry and the master’s programme in Chemistry have been joint-degree programmes.
